A talk by Barry Schwartz on TED called We Stopped Being Wise.  It’s about life in America today and is full of wisdom and hope and is worth listening to.

Some highlights from the talk —

“A wise person knows when and how to make the exception to every rule /…/ a wise person knows when to improvise /…/ a wise person knows how to use skills in the pursuit of the right aims, to serve other people, not to manipulate them /…/ the good news is that you don’t need to be brilliant to be wise, the bad news is that brilliance isn’t enough /…/

Rules and procedures may be dumb, but they spare you from thinking /…/ when things go wrong, we reach for two tools:  rules and incentives /…/ by appealing to rules and incentives we are engaging in a war on wisdom.”
