and now for my next trick

year of the delusion

with one comment

From the article ‘2009 Will Be a Year of Panic‘ in SEED magazine.

But a delusion that lasts for decades is not a delusion. It’s an institution. And these, our institutions, are what now fail us. People no longer know what they value. They don’t know what to believe. And unfortunately, it’s part of the human condition to believe and invest in things that are demonstrably not true.

  1. Virginia Woolf was already chipping away at the delusions of illusion in her book, A Room of One’s Own. She imaginatively introduces to her essay on Women and Fiction the possibility of a sister for Shakespeare, man of incandescence and vision. Not as a counter to his genius but rather bringing to light the necessary conditions for the production of a masterwork — settling much of her discontents on issues of ownership, social status, and the proprietary domain of one’s work. She argues that women’s right to vote is less significant than women’s right to write. Is not the intern architect confronting a similar oppression in the 21st century?
